Jolly Grubber, North Beach

I was so looking forward to the lunch that my wife had so kindly prepared for me, until crisis hit! I’d left my lunch bag at home. Smart. Now, I’m not normally a breakfast person so by lunch time I’m hangry. And yesterday, my colleague was equally hangry. (Hangry. Adjective. Angry as a result of hunger)

I’d heard rumblings of a new Jolly Grubber pop up store just down the road from my workplace at Durban’s North Beach.

Situated where Zacks North Beach once was, it wasn’t hard to miss. JoJo the clown sat on the balcony with ample signage. Walking up the stairs, we were met at the entrance by smiling staff. We were directed in and I took my seat against the glass with stunning 180 degree sea views. As it’s a pop up shop and only here for the next month or so, there is minimal decor and it’s casual seating with trestle tables and plastic chairs, which is no problem – we were there for the food.

They don’t have waiters per se; you order and pay from the counter, and the lovely staff bring your meals to you. Although we’re both men with healthy appetites, we decided to share the 3C’s sandwich; chicken, chips and cheese as a starter. It came toasted to golden perfection, with a hearty filling of diced chicken, melted cheese and chips, in a tasty and spicy sauce. We didn’t have additional chips on the side, although it would have been great to mop up that tangy leftover sauce.

We then opted for the chicken tikka and cheese burger and a monster cheese burger with a mutton patty. My lunch companion can handle heat, but he chose mild just in case. After demolishing the burger in several seconds, he conceded that he could have tolerated the hotter option. His burger had a generously sized chicken fillet, cooked just right with a tasty tikka sauce.
I always enjoy a good mutton burger and today was no exception. The patty was flavoured correctly and cooked the way it should be – firm with just enough moisture, and the meal was tasty with a hint of spicy bite.
Our generous portions of chips were perfectly fried and seasoned.

In and out in an hour. Great food, lovely views – this will be an awesome beach front spot for a quick, easy and tasty lunch. There’s even a kiddies play area.

Jolly Grubber pop up store is located on the first floor (old Zacks) on North Beach, is open from 8am-10pm, and serves the full Jolly Grubber menu.
