I love lunch, mostly because I don’t often eat breakfast, but also because it means a midday break from the world. I also like trying new places, new food, new experiences, and whilst Union Square is not new food to me, their new lunch menu is.
I called up the wife and friend and told them I just had to had to go. Plus, I’m a cheapskate when it comes to lunch, so the cost-effective menu appealed to me even more.
The Legendary Lunch Special menu is comprised of the five more popular menu items: chicken or beef burger, chicken strips (flavoured to your choice), calamari or peri peri chicken breasts – all served with chips, for R39. Yes, R39. Being a lunch menu, they are slightly smaller portions than your regular menu items. But I can assure you, we were more that satisfied after.
Just a note: you can “spice up” the lunch menu with normal add-ons. Just ask for the order-sheet, and we did just that. I ordered the beef burger, which comes stock with red onions and house mayo, and I slapped on a slice of cheese. My wife had the strips, BBQ sauce, and she changed her normal chips for cheesy sweet potato chips. Our friend had the peri peri chicken breasts with cheesy chips.
The burger was of the expected smashing Union Square standards. Cooked and seasoned just right, with just enough moisture left in, and the house mayo onions and cheese finished it off perfectly. I had the plain chips; crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy inside with that awesome spice mix generously sprinkled on.
The wife’s strips were cooked to perfection, smothered in a tasty BBQ sauce, and the cheesy sweet potato chips are on their own level of awesome. I risked life and limb just trying to steal a bite of each away from her (The doctor says the lacerations are healing nicely).
Our friend’s peri peri chicken breasts had a tasty, clean peri peri bite to them. Grilled just the way they should be and not dry. Her cheesy chips had the normal chip spice on with the added creamy oozy greatness of the cheese sauce.
Not ones to end it there, but recovering from the sizeable portions, we decimated an Oreo waffle. A round waffle cut into quarters, sided with rocky road ice-cream, chocolate sauce and Oreo pieces. You can mix, match and mess to your heart’s content.
So, next time you have a gap at work, varsity, or general daily life – go and grab a Union Square lunch.
The Legendary Lunch Special menu is available at the Durban North and Hillcrest stores, Monday to Friday from 11am to 4pm.
